yellow cab holiday block leave we support our troops

Yellow Cab Helps Troops to Get Home for the Holidays

For the third year in a row, Yellow Cab will transport trainees from Fort Sam Houston to the airport for their annual Holiday Block Leave.

“This is the first time that these trainees have been home since joining the military,” said George Alva, Yellow Cab Driver Services Manager. “Providing transportation is our way of saying thank you to these brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting our country.”

Starting at 2 A.M. on December 18th, Yellow Cab will take 3,000 Army, Navy, and Air Force service men and women from their base at Fort Sam Houston to a secure area in the San Antonio Airport where they will continue their journey to spend the holidays with their loved ones.

“It takes a lot of preparation and coordination to move this many people,” said Alva. “But all of the effort is worth it when we see the joy on the faces of the service men and women. Yellow Cab believes in our troops, we support them, and we appreciate their sacrifice. This is our contribution towards helping them have a happy holiday season.”

Yellow Cab and Taxis Fiesta Sponsor the 16th Annual HLAGH Bike Build

Twenty-five teams of hoteliers joined three Yellow Cab teams in a friendly competition to build bikes for children.

“This is one of our biggest events of the year,” said Frederick J.Goodall, Director of Corporate Communications. “Our employees have been looking forward to it for months because it’s a fun way to serve our community.”

The event, hosted by the Hotel & Lodging Association of Greater Houston, benefited Child Advocates, an organization that mobilizes court appointed volunteers to break the vicious cycle of child abuse. They speak up for abused children who are lost in the system and guide them into safe environments where they can thrive.

Each team was tasked with building two bikes and creating two Christmas cards. The competition was fierce as the teams raced to complete their mission. Within 12 minutes, the first bikes were ready for the safety inspection.

Bike Build

“It’s amazing to watch these teams work together to build these bikes,” said Stephanie Haynes, President of the HLAGH. “I love the spirit of cooperation and the commitment to helping kids.”

After the bikes were built, the teams were invited on stage to take a photo with the child who was receiving the bike.

“Watching the children’s faces light up when they got their bikes was the highlight of the evening,” said Goodall. “This is the reason why we do this every year.”

In addition to receiving a new bike, each child got to pick a new toy from Pancho Claus‘ low rider.

But the competition didn’t end with building bikes. The second part of the event was the relay race. Team members competed by hitting a golf ball across the floor, hula-hooping, balancing a wiffle ball, and bouncing on a “hippity hop” ball.

“We’d like to thank Yellow Cab and Taxis Fiesta for being the title sponsor,” said Haynes. “This year’s event was a tremendous success because of your continued support.”

Yellow Cab Brings Joy to Homeless Families on Thanksgiving

About 50 independent contractor drivers from Houston’s largest taxicab fleet, Yellow Cab, gave up their Thanksgiving morning to transport homeless women and children from Star of Hope’s Transitional Living Center to the Hard Rock Café for a special Thanksgiving dinner.

“Our clients love the experience of riding in a cab and getting a catered meal on Thanksgiving.” said Rick Christie, Star of Hope’s Head of Interactive Communications.  “The annual event is a joyous occasion that makes each family feel special.”

Escorts from Precinct 6 led the caravan down Houston’s highways and through downtown followed closely by the Yellow Cab Jeep driven by Corporate Communications Director, Frederick J. Goodall.

“I have volunteered at the Star of Hope Transitional Living Center for many years,” said Goodall. “It was an honor to serve the families in this capacity on Thanksgiving.”

Yellow Cab Director of Sales and Marketing, Starla Fitch handed out gift bags filled with candy and other items for the children. Each mother received a Yellow Rose.

“This event was very heart warming,” said Fitch. “Seeing the excitement in the eyes of the children as they picked the cab that would take them to the Hard Rock Cafe was pure joy. I look forward to doing this again next year.”

Dozens of Houston hotels and allied members gathered in Hall A3 of the George R. Brown Convention Center for the Hotel & Lodging Association of Greater Houston’s (HLAGH) annual bike building event. Benefiting Child Advocates and the HLAGH, 25 teams were each tasked with building two bikes for deserving kiddos involved with the Child Advocates program. There was a competition to see which team could build their bikes the fastest while simultaneously creating a holiday card to give each child. After passing a safety inspection, teams were invited to the stage for a quick picture and then it was off to the relay race! Team members had to compete by jumping rope, bouncing on a “hippity hop”, and balancing a wiffle ball as they dashed across the hall.

EFTX-mobile-billboard-2014-1-v2

Yellow Cab donated mobile billboard space that will travel throughout the greater Houston area to promote EFTX’s many resources and services.

The campaign focuses on the “1 in 26” statistic- one in 26 people will develop epilepsy. Many find this fact surprising and EFTX is here to help connect the community with the tools and support they need. Contrary to popular belief, epilepsy affects people of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life. EFTX offers medical clinics, educational programs, support groups, wellness activities and recreational/camping adventures.
